John Deere & Guss Partner On Autonomous Electric Orchard Sprayer
John Deere and Guss Automation recently debuted the first-ever fully electric, autonomous herbicide orchard sprayer at the 2024 World Ag Expo in Tulare, California. The Electric Guss builds on the autonomous Guss herbicide sprayer that launched in 2023. The new fully electric sprayer allows operators to control multiple sprayers remotely to increase productivity with higher precision and lower emissions. The Electric Guss will soon be available through select John Deere dealerships in North America and Australia.
"The all-new electric Guss will provide farmers with reliable and powerful performance, with added benefits to help increase productivity and profitability," says Sean Sundberg, John Deere business integration manager.
Electric Guss Weed Spraying System
The Guss is 23.5 feet (7.16 meters) long and 6.33 ft (1.9 m) tall, with an 8.4-ft (2.5-m) transport width and a 19-ft (5.8-m) operational width with its height-adjustable hydraulic spray booms deployed. The sprayer’s booms can accommodate row spacing from 18 to 22 inches (46 to 56 centimeters) and can tilt upward for berm spraying. The booms’ breakaway design prevents damage to trees or crops during operation.
The electric, autonomous herbicide sprayer has a spot-spraying weed detection system that can identify the chlorophyll in weeds and spray them where they are detected. This dramatically reduces overall application to save up to 90% on materials and lowers operating costs and material drift.
Battery & Safety Technology
The Electric Guss runs on Kriesel batteries that provide a full day’s work on a single charge. A single operator can run and monitor as many as eight Guss sprayers via a laptop from their vehicle using a combination of GPS, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and proprietary technology.
This reduces the likelihood of the operator being exposed to herbicides. The sprayer’s autonomous technology includes safety features that avoid hazards and will automatically pause spraying if people are nearby.
Updates For Other Guss Sprayers
Owners of the diesel-powered Orchard Guss and Mini Guss autonomous blast sprayers can now add the Smart Apply Intelligent Spray Control System, which was acquired by John Deere last year. Smart Apply provides precision application as well as data and analytics to improve the blast sprayers’ performance. The system automatically adjusts spray volume according to the size and foliage density of trees to avoid over-spraying and save up to 50% on chemical and water costs.
