RentMany specialty crops, including especially nut crops, require some extra maintenance midway through the harvesting process; conditioners speed up a crop’s drying time for more efficient harvesting and optimal yields.
Read More (About Conditioners)A conditioner is a pre-harvesting tool that speeds up the crop’s drying time to prevent loss from rot and insects. Some conditioners are called “cleaners” because they also remove debris and shuck material, such as leaves and hulls, which can trap moisture like a layer of mulch. There are a variety of conditioners for specialty crops such as peanuts, pecans, and walnuts. Once a crop has been dug up (for peanuts) or shaken down (for tree nuts) and gathered into windrows, it’s time to put a conditioner to work.
The Exact E-250 E-Z Prep Conditioner from Exact Harvesting Systems is an example of a conditioner that picks up windrows of tree nuts, removes sticks and other debris, and redeposits the nuts back on the ground in the same neat row. The company says that cleaner windrows let operators run their harvester at a faster speed. Similar products, such as the StickJack and PrepperJack from Jack Rabbit, can reduce labor and enhance harvesting performance by drying nuts and letting operators eject the sticks they’ve sorted out at the end of the row on a conveyor belt.
For peanuts, Amadas Industries’ Crop Lifter-Conditioner CLC16, CLC18, and CLC25 models, which range in width from 16 to 25 feet (4.9 to 7.6 meters), use the same six-bar pickup as the company’s combine headers to gently lift and replace windrows of peanut vines. This enables air to circulate and dirt to fall out, thus accelerating the drying process. The Kelley MFG Co (KMC) Vine Conditioner, which the company sells in folding and rigid six-row models, operates on the same principle.
The Savage Redline Cleaner 4224, which is available in gas- and electric motor-powered variants, has a tree nut conveyor that doubles as an inspection table so orchard workers can pick out remaining debris. The company also sells a Pre-Cleaner 4324 to remove waste material and bulk load the crop into a trailer for later processing.
KMC also offers its Vine Lifter for peanut windrows that have been rained on and are sticking to the crust of the soil. The Vine Lifter, available in two- and six-row models, uses horizontal blades to scrape underneath the vines and free them from the crust. Exact Harvesting Systems’ Exact E-385 Low Dust E-Z Prep Conditioner uses the company’s patented Eco-Clean dust-reduction technology to cut down on conditioning dust to reduce drying time while also collecting sticks it leaves at the end of the row.
SpecialtyCropEQ.com regularly makes available a selection of new and used conditioners for sale, including machines from Amadas Industries, Exact Harvesting Systems, and other leading manufacturers.
