RentIndustrial-strength blowers are useful items to have around orchards, vineyards, and other types of crop farms; they help to harvest some crops and help others dry for optimal harvesting.
Read More (About Blowers)Blowers are well suited for a variety of applications and environments, but their primary purpose is to clear away debris. Orchards, vineyards, and farms commonly use them to remove things like leaves, branches, and rotten fruit from underneath trees or vines to ensure that pests have fewer places to hide and to prevent diseases from spreading. However, you can also use them for other tasks, like clearing greens and fairways on golf courses or blowing away excess moisture from cherries and other crops right before the harvest.
What makes blowers particularly beneficial for agricultural use cases is that by using different chute and nozzle configurations, you can effectively create rows of debris for quicker disposal, saving time, money, and manual effort. You can also apply this same concept to harvesting walnuts, almonds, and other nuts by blowing them into rows or piles to make it easier for the harvester to collect them. If you prefer to have more control over the operation, you can attach hoses or ducts to the end of the blower chute and have workers walk next to the tractor directing the air.
Blowers are typically mounted on tractors, though there are quite a few lower-powered walk-behind and pull-behind models with built-in engines available. Larger blowers are designed for towing behind tractors and use power from the power take-off (PTO) system to run the fan. The power needed often ranges from around 40 to 90 horsepower with between 500 and 1,000 rotations per minute, though some models will go below or above those figures. This dictates the air velocity, usually between 10,000 and 45,000 cubic feet per minute, as well as the air speed, which typically measures in at around 130 miles per hour or faster.
In addition to blowers with one chute, there are also dual or two-way blowers that can blast debris away from two rows at the same time. Some models also come with built-in hitches so you can pull a sprayer system behind the blower. This allows you to clear the space underneath trees and then apply chemicals or other liquids to crops on the same pass. However, it’s important to keep track of the width of the blower, especially with two-way models, to ensure it will fit in the row between trees or vines as to not damage valuable crops or the machine itself.
Some of the most popular blower manufacturers include Frank Russell, Slimline, and Weiss McNair. Russell’s Berm Blaster is a dual blower that uses 540 rpm to produce a maximum air discharge of 24,000 cubic feet per minute and air speeds of over 135 miles per hour. It also features breakaway booms to prevent damage to the core machine, forklift pockets for easy loading and unloading, and a 2-inch, reinforced receiver for hauling a spray system.
Slimline offers application-specific solutions with its S30PM55 and S38PM55 Turbo-mist Cherry Blowers. The S30PM55 has a 30-inch fan and uses 55 PTO horsepower to generate an air velocity of 25,551 cubic feet per minute, and the S38PM55 has a 38-inch fan that produces an air velocity of 40,110 cubic feet per minute at 80 horsepower. Both machines are tailor-made to blow away excess moisture from cherries to reduce the risk of splitting in the rain.
Weiss McNair sells three tractor-mounted blower models: the B85, the B87, and the B89. They range from 40 horsepower at 540 rpm to 85 horsepower at 1,000 rpm. Air velocities for each model are 10,500 cubic feet per minute for the B85 and 25,000 cubic feet per minute for the B87 and B89. The B85 is only available as a one-way, but both the B87 and B89 are available as dual blowers.
