    About Harvesters

Amadas Industries A9970 Self-Propelled Peanut Combine

Specialty crop harvesters, sometimes referred to as combines, bring in crops of nuts, grapes, berries, vegetables, olives, coffee beans, and other plants. Most models remove the stems, leaves, and other debris from the crop for a cleaner harvest. Harvesters come in pull-type and self-propelled models, and there are some types that mount on the side of a tractor. Some are the hopper type models with a bin for the crop, while others use a conveyor to offload the crop to an accompanying trailer.

    Crop-Specific Harvesters

One common machine in this category is the nut harvester, which is typically used for two different types of nuts: peanuts and tree nuts. Peanut harvesters gather windrows of vines a few days after the crop has been unearthed and left to dry. Tree nuts such as walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts/filberts, pistachios, and almonds require ground harvesters, which sweep or suck up fallen nuts. Some operations also us shakers to shake the trunk of each tree and catch the nuts as they fall out.

Grape and berry harvesters gather grapes suitable for use by wineries or blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and other types of berries. Fragile berry varieties sometimes require self-propelled harvesters to complement human workers sorting the crop into small, stackable totes to prevent damage. Vegetable harvesters are used for root crops such as potatoes and beets are common, but there are also highly specialized models used to harvest onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips, turnips, radishes, endives, and other tubers. There are also harvesters that specialize in surface crops, including green beans, spinach, chili peppers, peas, cabbage, and lettuce.
