Side-mounted shakers are usually self-propelled vehicles used for the down-the-row harvesting of apples, cherries, plums, olives, tree nuts, and other specialty crops. A side-mounted shaker uses an extendable, side-mounted, padded clamp to grab a tree trunk or limb and then shake it to make the tree’s fruit or nuts fall off. The crop either falls on the ground where a ground harvesting machine will scoop or suck it up later, or it is caught, cleaned, and conveyed by overhead panels and a similarly equipped receiver vehicle on the other side of the tree. A shaker that uses such panels is called a catching frame set.

Side Shaker Advantages

Side shakers have an obvious advantage over front and rear shakers in that the driver doesn’t have to drive or back the machine up to the tree. Instead, an operator can drive a side shaker straight down the row between the orchard trees, extending the shaker head and retracting it for each tree. This method can save time, effort, fuel, and wear and tear on the shaker’s drivetrain and brakes.
