    About Carts

    Carts that collect and haul specialty crops are similar in appearance and functionality to grain carts used with harvested grain crops. Available in pull-type models or fixed or attached to some type of cab, specialty carts may be designed for use with a specific crop type, such as sugar beets or potatoes, or may be adaptable to handle multiple crop types, including almonds, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, and pecans. Some manufacturers design specialty crop carts for use in particular climates, such as wet harvesting conditions, as well as for particular regions, such as the South or Pacific Northwest. Similarly, some models are marketed as being primarily designed for use with a specialty crop, but can often also haul grain and other crops. Both tracked and wheeled specialty crop carts are available, as are models using side-, rear-, bottom-, or other dumping mechanisms along with augers and cleaning chains.

    Cart Characteristics

    Specialty crop carts are generally designed to be rugged and hold up to operating in rough terrain. Modern models often provide hydraulic features that operators can control from within the cab, including mechanisms for quickly unloading crops in order to streamline the harvesting process. In addition to models that operators can drive up to or over a conveyor for unloading, some models are equipped with adjustable chains, augers, conveyors, and elevator unloading systems, as well as the use of textured belts to support efficient unloading even in damp harvesting conditions. Depending on the model, a specialty crop cart may also have rounded walls, tapered sides, optional side panels, or other unique designs to accommodate low-hanging branches and other obstacles.

    Specialty Crop Cart Features

    Besides foldable booms that make transportation easier, specialty crop carts may variously include some type of “de-sticker” apparatus to remove sticks gathered while harvesting. Similar features can include stick collection boxes, the ability to dump sticks at the end of a row, and meshed conveyors or other cleaning screens that are used to filter out dirt and other debris. Other features and options can include flotation tires, wireless weight scales, side panels, and reversible tongues to support right- or left-side dumping. Self-propelled carts may support faster transport speeds, various unloading speeds, articulated steering for better in-field maneuverability, air ride suspensions, hydrostatic transmissions, and service brakes. While carts differ in size and capacity, specialty crop carts generally extend beyond 300-cubic-foot (8.5-cubic-meter) capacities to hold hundreds of bushels, and in some cases can stretch past 15 feet (1.5 meters) long and 8 feet (2.4 meters) wide.
