Read More (About Pull-Type Carts)Pull-type carts are similar in a number of ways to grain carts, and, in fact, some models can be used interchangeably for grain, nuts, and other crops. Specialty crop carts, however, typically focus on one type or category of crop, like beets or nuts. Some models are designed to collect a specific nut variety, like hazelnuts, pecans, or almonds, while others are versatile enough to handle several different types, which may or may not require adjustments in between harvests.
Most pull-type carts have a mechanism that allows them to dump harvested crops from the front, rear, or off to the side, but there are some bottom dump models available as well. Carts come in a variety of shapes: Some have a more angled, square shape, while others have rounded sidewalls. Rounded models are beneficial because they don’t have sharp corners where dust and debris might collect, which may make them easier to unload and to clean. Some carts have systems built-in that can either remove sticks or collect and dump them at the end of a row. There are also carts, sometimes referred to as pre-cleaner carts, specifically designed to remove sticks and leave crops in a clean windrow for quicker drying.
Specialty crop carts typically have capacities of around 300 cubic feet (8.5 cubic meters) or more and measure 15 feet (4.6 meters) long and 8 ft. (2.4m) wide, but exact specifications will vary from model to model. Because these carts are often used for collecting nuts between rows of trees, they may have fold-down booms to prevent damage to branches during transport and harvesting. Other common features include conveyors, protection hoods, and chains designed for specific types of nuts, like almonds or walnuts and pecans.
Pull-type carts are unique from self-propelled alternatives because they require a tractor or some other machine to tow them. It’s common for farmers and ranchers to couple a pull-type cart with a harvester for a more efficient operation, because the harvester will pick nuts up off the ground and then feed them into the cart. Many manufacturers, like GK Machine Company, produce carts and harvesters designed to work together seamlessly.
