Flory Industries has been a leading global manufacturer of nut-harvesting equipment since the 1970s when it transitioned from a custom grain-harvesting operation to become a developer and manufacturer of equipment for growing and harvesting nut crops. The company’s manufacturing facility still resides on the same property the Flory family purchased in Salida, California, in 1909 and built a barn and home on in 1910.
With dealers in Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, and Australia, Flory’s products include sweepers, conditioners, harvesters, carts, shuttle trucks, elevators/de-stickers, mowers, shredders, blowers, and dusters. These pieces of specialty equipment are used in almond, cashew, chestnut, fig, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, walnut, and other nut-crop operations. Flory is also an authorized parts and service dealer for John Deere, Cat, Cummins, Honda, Kubota, Stihl, Wisconsin Motors, and Kohler Engines.
After establishing a dairy cow operation in the 1920s, Flory expanded into custom grain and bean harvesting, eventually counting 15 harvesters in its operation, including two bean harvesters that Howard Flory designed and built and that reportedly lasted 30 harvesting seasons before being retired in 1974. Howard Flory is also credited with developing the Flory Special, a 37-foot long, 14-ton harvester first used in 1924. In the late 1950s, Flory recognized that tree crops were becoming more prominent, and, as such, built a working pick-up harvester for almonds that attracted other area growers’ attention.
Ultimately, it was the development of a self-propelled harvester that led Flory to convert from custom grain harvesting to full-time manufacturing. The 1970s found Flory beginning international marketing efforts, adopting high-tech manufacturing processes, and releasing its first self-propelled heavy-duty sweeper to feature a hydrostatic transmission and five-bar sweeper reel. Flory’s equipment today includes the 8770 Self-Propelled Nut Harvester, V62 Series Nut Sweeper, and CP87 Windrow Conditioner.
In addition to manufacturing specialty crop equipment, Flory’s parts and service operations span engines and power equipment, hardware, hydraulics, implements, supplies, fluids, tools, batteries, cables, switches, gauges, and more covering blowers, carts, conditioners, dusters, de-stickers, elevators, mowers, harvesters, shredders, commercial lawn and garden equipment, and other equipment. Since the mid-1980s, Flory has also offered contracted fabrication services, including precision laser, punching, forming, rolling, shearing, CNC machining, galvanizing, welding, and powder coating for everything from individual parts to finished assemblies.
