    Hedgers & Hedging

Hedgers are tractor-mounted or self-propelled machines that use saw blades, sickle-style cutting bars, flail knives, and other components to prune, or trim, the sides of rows of plants or trees in nut and fruit orchards and vineyards. Doing so helps growers keep plants and trees at ideal heights, widths, and shapes, which helps them maximize crop yields. The pruning process also clears the area between rows for better visibility and helps improve the overall efficiency of operations.

Hedging also opens the plant or tree up to receive more sunlight and moisture while simultaneously reducing the risk of disease. Also referred to as pre-pruners and trimmers, hedgers are similar to toppers, which are machines used to trim the tops of plants and trees. Some manufacturers offer machines that can perform both hedger and topper chores; a smaller number of manufacturers produce machines that can perform hedging, topping, and skirting tasks.

    Types Of Hedgers

Hedgers are available in light-, medium-, and heavy-duty models, where each type is designed to handle specific ranges of growth. You’ll also find models offering single- and double-cutting systems. Double-hedger models can trim both sides of a row in a single pass. Some models are designed to work in narrow rows but at great heights, while other models specialize at finely mulching discarded growth. Hedgers may include adjustable cutting heights, tilting cutting heads, the use of sensors and vision-based technologies to detect and avoid stakes and beams and track cordons, support for night pruning, in-cab control of hydraulics, 360-degree rotating cutting heads, and support for working on steep slopes.

    Hedging Machine Makeup

Whether they are used to aid in the production of grapes, cherries, pecans, walnuts, olives, or peaches, hedgers are designed to perform one task: trimming the sides of plants. That said, models can offer an array of features, including independent hydraulic systems, electric controls, flotation tires to reduce soil compaction, cutting heads that can move in and out of and over rows, self-leveling cutting heads, safety locks, joystick controls, fine-mulching abilities, and speeds topping 6 mph. Depending on the model, maximum hedging widths can extend beyond 10 feet, while maximum hedging heights can top 25 feet. Larger models can tackle limbs measuring several inches in diameter.

New and used hedgers typically available for sale on this site include models from Clemens, Collard, FAMA, GLOBUS, Pellenc, and Rinieri.
