RentPruning towers are mobile elevated work platforms that are designed especially for use in orchard tending and harvesting operations and are a vastly more efficient stand-in for ladders.
Read More (About Pruning Towers)Pruning towers, also known as “orchard man lifts,” are essentially self-propelled telescopic booms that are used in various orchard and specialty crop operations. Their use greatly enhances worker safety and overall productivity when pruning walnut, pecan, and other trees. Often available in 10- to 25-foot (3- to 7.6-meter) boom lengths, pruning towers enable operators to effectively reach upward of 35 feet (10.7 meters) or so when factoring in the operator’s own height.
Low-maintenance machines that one person can operate, pruning towers may weigh more than 4,000 pounds (1,814 kilograms), provide forward and reverse operations, offer a hydrostatic drive system, include a Tier 4 Final engine in the 25-horsepower range, and support crop-picking tasks. While most models hold one worker, some models sport larger platforms that support multiple workers; some also allow growers to attach a shaker head to perform mechanical-harvesting tasks.
Compared to using tall, heavy ladders that workers must continually reposition, pruning towers are far less physically demanding to use and are more efficient and safer, especially for use on uneven terrain. Pruning towers also grant easier access to hard-to-reach limbs and branches than ladders. Many models enable the operator to control all machine movements from the platform using a control console or joystick.
Equipped with three or more wheels or tracks, pruning towers can move easily down orchard rows and in and out of trees. When moving from orchard to orchard, some models can be towed at road speeds, while others offer two-speed ground drive systems for slower in-field work and faster transport purposes. In some cases, pruning towers may include retractable drive wheels or hydraulically controlled sliding axles that position the tires for road transport.
Pruning towers feature rugged chassis construction designed for durability and to prevent damage stemming from falling branches. Some models also feature dual-wheel configurations for greater flotation where soil compaction may be an issue, as well as an external fuel tank for longer operation, conveniently located tool racks and holders, automatic shut-down systems, and foot pedals to raise and lower the bucket and leave the operator’s hands free to perform pruning duties. Other features may include easy bucket access, enclosed or protected hosing, ergonomic design touches, heating and cooling, and various safety features. The latter often includes padding as well as a safety harness and latches.
Gillison’s, Jack Rabbit, Nelson Manufacturing, and Weldcraft Industries are some of the manufacturers that make pruning towers and related orchard harvesting equipment. You’ll find an assortment of new and used pruning towers for sale on SpecialtyCropEQ.com.
